CPU and storage factories fully support DDR5!
    2022/11/24 16:31:50
Driven by servers and data centers, the demand for DDR5 products has increased. Intel and AMD, the two major CPU manufacturers, actively promote the penetration of DDR5 in the server and data center fields. At the same time, major storage manufacturers spare no effort to launch related products. With the help of CPU and storage manufacturers, the popularity of DDR5 continues to increase.
    AMD: Seven Advantages of DDR5
Recently, AMD released the fourth generation EPYC (Xiaolong) processor CPU, code named "Genoa". EPYC launched up to 18 SKUs for the first time, with up to 96 core 192 threads in a single path. It supports PCIe 5.0, CXL 1.1, DDR5 and many other advanced technologies.
In August this year, AMD launched the Reelon 7000 series processor, which "radically" gave up DDR4 compatibility in memory and only supported DDR5. Today, the new generation EPYC CPU supports 12 DDR5 memory channels, while the previous generation only supports 8 DDR4.
This again reflects that AMD fully embraces DDR5 technology. Compared with DDR4, what are the advantages of DDR5? At the press conference, AMD listed seven advantages of DDR5, including:
Faster speed, DDR5 frequency jumps from 4800MHz; Lower energy consumption, IO voltage drops from 1.2V to 1.1V; More power saving, DDR5 integrates power management IC, while DDR4 requires motherboard; Higher bandwidth. A single DDR5 memory uses dual channels, while a single DDR4 only uses a single channel; More efficient, the burst termination and burst length of DDR5 are extended to 8 and 16 bits respectively; Higher capacity, the single core capacity is increased from 2GB to 8GB, and the maximum single memory module is 256GB; More reliable. DDR5 supports ECC error correction. For enterprise and server customers, it is more reliable and scalable
Follow up by large storage plants: launch new DDR5 products
After the release of the fourth generation EPYC, SK Hynix and Micron soon announced the launch of related DDR5 products.

SK Hynix: DDR5 and CXL solutions are verified by AMD EPYC 9004 series processors
SK Hynix announced that its DRAM and CXL solutions have passed the validation of the fourth generation AMD EPYC (Xiaolong) 9004 series processors. The 4th generation AMD EPYC processor is built on the new SP5 socket and provides innovative technology and functionality, including support for advanced DDR5 and CXL 1.1+memory expansion.
SK Hynix 1ynm, 1anm 16Gb DDR5 and 1anm 24Gb DDR5 DRAM support 4800Mbps frequency on the fourth generation AMD EPYC processor, and the memory bandwidth is increased by up to 50% compared with DDR4 products.
SK Hynix also provides CXL memory device, which is a 96GB product composed of 24Gb DDR5 DRAM based on 1anm.
Chee Hoe Chu, Vice President of American System Engineering for SK Hynix Memory Solutions, said that this cooperation enables SK Hynix to provide high-performance PCIe Gen 5 NVMe solutions through its PS10x0, and respond to the needs of today's AI and ML application markets.

Micron: DDR5 is now available for the fourth generation AMD EPYC processor
Micron announced the introduction of DDR5 memory for data centers, which has been validated against the new AMD EPYC 9004 series processors.
As modern servers load more processing cores into CPUs, the memory bandwidth of each CPU core has been declining. Compared with previous generations of products, Micron DDR5 alleviates this bottleneck by providing higher bandwidth, thus improving reliability and scalability.
Micron said that this memory supports the current 4800MT/s and the future 8800MT/s. Compared with the DDR4 with 3200MT/s, the effective memory bandwidth of the DDR5 with 4800MT/s of Micron has been increased by two times. At the same time, it also supports ECC error checking, ECS fault limitation and other functions.
In addition, Micron said that DDR5 will bring new and higher density through 24Gb components, and there will be higher density in the future.
